TODAY IN HISTORY—MAY 16, 2020:

Armed Forces Day (National Observance); Preakness Stakes

Vice President Levi P. Morton; U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward; Black Sabbath featuring Ronnie James Dio, King Crimson featuring Robert Fripp, Nirvana featuring Krist Novoselic, Robin Trower featuring James Dewar, Savoy Brown featuring Roger Earl, and the Who:

  1. 1770: Marie Antoinette, age 14, married the future King Louis XVI of France, who was only 15 years old.
  2. 1771: The Battle of Alamance, a pre-American Revolutionary War battle between local militia and a group of rebels called the Regulators, took place on this date in Alamance County, North Carolina.
  3. 1792: Denmark abolishes the slave trade.
  4. 1801: In Florida, N.Y., future 24thS. Secretary of State William H. Seward is born. He would serve under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson from 03-06-1861 to 03-04-1869.  During this time, he bought Alaska from the Russians, something many saw as foolhardy and a waste of taxpayers’ money.  In fact, so many derided the purchase, they called it “Seward’s Folly;” that is, until massive gold deposits were discovered there.  In 2019, the 45th president of the United States sought to buy Greenland from Denmark and everyone laughed at him, including the Europeans.  Imagine how important Alaska is to the United States geopolitically and the same could be true of Greenland.  We shall see.
  5. 1817: Regular steamboat service up-and-down the Mississippi River begins on this date.
  6. 1824: The future 22nd Republican vice president of the United States—Levi P. Morton—is born in Shoreham, Vermont, on this date. He served under President Benjamin Harrison from 1889-1893.

  10. 1866: Charles Elmer Hires invents root beer on this date. Elsewhere, Congress authorized the first 5-cent piece to undergo minting.
  11. 1868: The U.S. Senate failed by one vote to convict President Andrew Johnson as it took its first ballot on the 11 articles of impeachment against him. Thirty-five out of 54 senators voted to find Johnson guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors” over his attempted dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, falling one vote short of the two-thirds majority required to convict; 10 days later, the trial ended after two other articles of impeachment went down in flames, too.  The problem was Johnson wanted to follow the wishes of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln who wanted to treat the South with leniency while Lincoln’s holdover Cabinet members wanted to crush them.
  12. 1869: The Cincinnati Reds play their first baseball game and win 41-7.
  13. 1879: The Treaty of Gandamak between Russia and Great Britain set up the Afghan state as a buffer nation between the two major powers.

  18. 1914: The American Horseshoe Pitchers Association organizes in Kansas City.

  23. 1939: The government began its first food stamp program in Rochester, New York; under future President Barack Obama, it is at the highest levels ever before seen. Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Athletics and the Cleveland Indians met at Shibe Park in Philly for the first baseball game played under lights in the American League.
  24. 1940: Prime Minister Winston Churchill returns to London from Paris as the Nazi juggernaut rolls across France.
  25. 1941: Over Birmingham, England, the Luftwaffe flies its last great air raid; after this, most units would begin moving eastward for the assault on Russia in early summer. Meanwhile, the Italian army in Ethiopia under Count Aosta surrenders to the British.
  26. 1943: The nearly month-long Warsaw Ghetto Uprising ended as German forces crushed the Jewish resistance and blew up the Great Synagogue. An estimated 7,000 Jews died during the uprising while the Nazis summarily executed about 7,000 others.  The Nazis deported the remaining Jews, more than 40,000 of them to concentration camps scattered across Poland.

  34. 1966: China launched the Cultural Revolution, a radical as well as deadly reform movement aimed at purging the country of “counter-revolutionaries.” This was a euphemism for slaughtering millions of older Chinese civilians who remembered the days before the communist revolution took over the country.

  40. 1983: The Lebanese Parliament signs a peace accord with Israel.

  42. 1988: The U.S. Supreme Court, in California v. Greenwood, ruled that police officers may search a person’s trash without a warrant. Elsewhere, Surgeon General C. Everett Koop released a report declaring nicotine was addictive in ways similar to heroin and cocaine.
  43. 1989: Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping ended a 30-year rift when they formally met in Beijing.
  44. 1991: Queen Elizabeth is the first British monarch to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

  51. 2019: According to the Global Drug Survey, English-speaking peoples are more likely to get drunk throughout the year than do, non-English speakers, with the British getting drunk the most, an average of 51 times per year. Folks, this is bogus information as Russians drink more than anyone and communist nations’ citizens (or authoritarian ones) drinking more than anyone anywhere else.
  52. 2020 Saturday: Thanks to communist China, the Wuhan Virus Crisis continues as the disease continues causing problems around the world. However, information coming from independent sources within the totalitarian state report as many as 750,000 cases of the coronavirus with possible number of deaths ranging from 150,000-to-250,000. Since the authoritarian state won’t tell the world the truth, we must rely on these brave sources willing to put their lives and those of their families at risk to get the truth out to the rest of the world. Here are the global statistics for today: 4,626,632 confirmed cases what with 311,363 confirmed deaths but 1,679,428 confirmed recoveries which is amazing, the number of recoveries compared to deaths. In the United States, we have 1,497,244 confirmed cases, 89,420 confirmed deaths, but 272,525 confirmed recoveries. In the three states where we have chef-authors, California, Hawaii, and Washington state, here are the stats, state by state, beginning first with the Golden State: 76,793 confirmed cases, 3,204 confirmed deaths, but of course, 0 confirmed recoveries- California, give us the information! You are no better than flipping communist China! For Hawaii, we have 638 confirmed cases, 17 confirmed deaths, and 564 confirmed recoveries- thank you, Gov. Ige. For the once great state of Washington, now beset by a socialist state government, here are the stats: 18,288 confirmed cases, 999 confirmed deaths, but like that fellator Gov. Gavin Newsom in California, NO number of confirmed recoveries because Gov. Inslee won’t share the stats. Vote these scumbags out of office as soon as possible.

Just the Facts: Mr. Trump, you promised to extricate us from wars, not send America’s fighting men-and-women to fight new ones

When George W. Bush invaded Afghanistan, there was good reason to do so because that was where that cave-dwelling POS Osama Bin Laden was lurking. There was every reason for the United States and the few NATO allies choosing to join us to go into that backward hellhole, clean the cockroaches and the centipedes out of their hidey-holes, and banish them and their backward bulls**t faith to the annals of history. Which, we did and yet, 19 years later, we are still there, something YOU promised to end upon assuming power.

SPRING SESSION 2019

BLOG POST #3,119 AT THE AICP-END

538 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2020

President Trump, please do not initiate a war with Iran- enough is enough

Kula, HI, 05-16-2019 Thursday:  Dear President Trump: I am a Republican and I live in Hawaii.  I voted for you because voting for Hillary was not something I felt I could do so I took a chance on you.  You seemed to like to scrap with political opponents which was something Republicans seldom see.  Not too often do we ever have the pleasure of seeing a Republican president or a speaker or a majority leader in the Senate willing to leap down into the trenches and go mano a mano against the Democrats.  We have longed for a pugilist who wanted to pepper our opponents with jabs to the cheek, a good solid right cross to the temple, and an awe-inspiring, rock-hard punch, smack dab to the middle of the leering Democrats’ faces.  You have done all these things and then some.

Moving forward (but I will return to you and your promises), I used to have faith in our intelligence community whereas now, I don’t nor should you, Mr. Trump- even with people you have appointed to serve with and under you.  I used to have faith in people like John Bolton, a superb United Nations ambassador whereas now, I am beginning to waver on him and those serving around and with him.  I see him as someone who SEEKS war and I am suspicious of his motives regarding Iran.

Yes, Iran is a godawful place, a nation that hates our guts and with good reason- we supported someone the people viewed as a dictator and then supported their eternal enemy wage a horrendous war against him, albeit we did it from the shadows with loads of cash funneled through various Arab countries.  In essence, we supported Saddam firing SCUD missiles all across Iran as well as his repeated usage of poisonous gas on the battlefield.  Is that the United States or a despotic nation?

When George W. Bush was president, he listened to people such as John Bolton and other Neocons, the people that in conjunction with the U.S. intel community and Britain’s and God knows who else GUARANTEED him that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction, the vaunted WMDs that will always set one-thousand ships sailing to destroy the evil Third World kingdoms we choose to eradicate.

John Bolton wants war with North Korea unless they bend to our demands.  He manipulated events in Venezuela with the hope that you, Mr. Trump would send in the Screaming Eagles to drive out Nicolas Maduro and put in yet another ‘moderate socialist’ to correct the mistakes by a hardcore socialist.

Now, Iran is ‘acting up,’ the perpetual enemy, I guess, since we cannot go to war with either Russia or China although if the trade war continues, well, we know what happened when we forced Japan into the corner: Pearl Harbor.  And remember, I live in this state so I know firsthand the price that is paid for belligerence without being prepared to either fight or to defend.  Do not listen to John Bolton, it is time to send him packing so he can hang with his good bud Bill Kristol and the rest of Military-Industrial Complex.

We here in Hawaii have always been patriotic, we see more of our boys and now our girls, too, enter the armed forces of the country.  We have lost more of them in combat since the Vietnam War than almost any other state by percentage of population.

We also have more than our share of wounded, of people damaged forever by the horrible things witnessed or committed on the battlefield, in the fight against a highly barbaric and evil foe.  It is one thing to fight because we must and quite another to engineer a Gulf of Tonkin Incident as ignited the unnecessary war in Vietnam back in the day.  Are we doing this again?

President Trump, you are an intelligent man, far more than your enemies will give you.  You are correct that we must beat China at its own game because for far too long, they have been raping our country.  There.  I said it.  I said what most other politicians are too fearful to say because yes, the Chinese are our enemy and yes, as mentioned yesterday, they pour massive amounts of cash into the coffers of Democratic politicians, including here in our state…like Mazie Hirono.

What we cannot do is to get in a hot war with China because…like it or not…that is one we cannot win due to the disparity in population.  What’s more, we cannot invade Iran with 120,000 troops no more than we could invade with 1,200,000 men and women.

Do not allow John Bolton to misinform and lie to you that the Iranian people will ‘rise up and support us.’  Isn’t that what he told us via his mouthpiece George W. Bush, that the “Iraqi people will rise up and support us?’  They might have had we sought their aid in 1991 but in 2003, there was no freaking way they would what with Daddy Bush encouraging them to rise up in the 1990s and then leaving them to their fate.

Who the hell would ever trust us again?  I know if I was a downtrodden person in a Third World crap hole, I sure as heck wouldn’t.  I love my life too much, even if it’s not that great so please, sir, no more Afghanistan’s, no more Iraq’s, no more Libya’s, no more Yemen’s or Iran’s or anywhere else our esteemed neocon ‘leaders’ have promised would be cakewalks.

YOU promised to get us out of wars so get us out.  There, I have said my piece, thank you for listening.

See you tomorrow.  Aloha for now.

FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY:

Peter Gabriel released his next solo effort on May 19, 1986, “So,” his biggest seller to date.  Once again, he brought together a who’s who of rock musicians including David Rhodes (guitars), Tony Levin (bass), Jerry Marotta (drums), and Larry Fast (keyboards) along with numerous other exceptionally talented musicians.  The album generated a massive radio hit in “Sledgehammer,” a tune still beloved to this date, decades later.  This is a stunningly good album and well worth seeking out at your favorite site for music as the artist rises to the occasion as the consummate live artist professional.  We know you will enjoy it and urge everyone to seek it out, give it a listen, and then add it to your collection.

On May 17, 1998, the James Gang released still another ‘best of’ compilation as record companies are wont to do, this one featuring the music of the Joe Walsh era exclusively.  “The Best of the James Gang,” contained the big, the medium, and the smaller cuts that defined the group and made it one of the powerhouse bands of its time.  Please, seek this one out and add it your ever-growing collection so you can enjoy it for years to come- you will be glad you did.

Humble Pie released yet another archival live release on August 07, 2010, “Hot and Nasty: Rockin’ the Winterland 1973.”  This is a great archival release featuring the second original or Mk. II lineup: Steve Marriott (guitars, keyboards, harmonica, and vocals), Clem Clemson (guitars, keyboards, and backing vocals), Greg Ridley (bass and vocals), and Jerry Shirley (drums, keyboards, and vocals).  The music rocks and rolls because it was a heady time back in the day, which is why we love this album and urge everyone to pick it up wherever they seek nothing but the best in rock-and-roll music.  Sadly, the album is missing “30 Days in the Hole,” but it is what it is.  You will be glad if you add it to your collection.
