One of the first things we expect to happen when Joe Biden becomes president is the return of the ACA- this could prove disastrous

Combine that with the economic and societal damage caused by COVID-19 and we have the prospect of economic destruction on a scale heretofore unimagined in the history of this country for working-class folks like you and I, even worse than the Great Depression was for our country.

WINTER SESSION 2021

BLOG POST #3,725 AT THE AICP-END

ELECTION DAY 2020 PLUS SIXTY-NINE

When Joe Biden enters the White House, expect the economy to worsen, not improve…

Wasco, CA 93280, 01-11-2021 Monday:  As I said last July, Tibe and me were among the 74 million people (as we later discovered) who were going to vote for President Trump on November 03.  Members of our family did so as well, all of us lifelong Democrats seeing as how we are who we are.  As a family, we discussed how we should vote, the consequences of our actions, and what we hoped to accomplish by going against our political party.

As I said six months ago, while not fans necessarily of ‘Trump the man,’ we were fans of what he was accomplishing economically.  The economy was booming, everyone who desired to make money was making money, new mortgages as well as re-finances were on the rise as were auto loans, business improvements, everything was sailing along smoothly and then the Chinese virus arrives on scene and everything goes to perdition in the proverbial handbasket.[i]

Earl Tiberias and I get it, the ongoing battles between Trump and his ever-plentiful enemies were tiresome, fatiguing, wearing, you name it, they matched all those descriptions and more.  However, all one needed to do was to shut off the TV, turn the radio from ‘talk’ to ‘Oldies’ and one could appreciate all the wonderful things occurring without having to participate in the daily barrages of incoming and outgoing fire.

Now that the election is over and it failed to go the way everyone anticipated it would, we now must accept the consequences, consequences that threaten to return our nation to the dire economic times between 2010 and 2017.  No, I’m not bad-mouthing Barack, we love Barack; however, what we didn’t love about Barack is that Obamacare was a bill of goods sold to the American people, one that messed up the economy of working-class folks like you and me.

If you return to some social media comments I wrote back in 2015- before various social media platforms blocked our blogs and social content, before Google began censoring us and/or putting us behind interstitial walls- I was pro-Obamacare, it seemed like an answer to ills that had plagued us for decades, affordable health care, health care available to and for everyone.

Well, all those guarantees about ‘keeping our doctor and our health care plans if we liked them’ were the bill of goods they sold us as well as pledges as to how much money we were going to save from the new plans- thousands at the end of each year.

As employers, we were on the frontlines of the PPACA- the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act- because we were mandated to provide health care coverage at our expense if we had above a certain number of employees and if we had less, then the employees themselves had to provide their own coverage or contend with the IRS.[ii]

The other crucial factor of the PPACA was how many hours hourly employees worked if we, the employer, had to cover the costs of their coverage.

IF the employee worked 40 hours or more per week we had to provide the coverage, coverage that was not cheap but was costly.  Thus, employers like my family and I were faced with a diabolical conundrum, we’d go bankrupt if we were forced to provide health care coverage to our full-time hourly employees which meant if we wanted to remain in business, we would have to pick who and who would not continue as a full-time worker.

Restaurants, grocery stores, department stores, big box stores, the line between the BLACK and the RED- especially for foodservice operations and minimarts and the like- is extremely thin, the razor’s edge if you will, as my colleagues have iterated before me.

Obamacare put all of us into a nosedive because the relationship between employer and employee changed irrevocably at least until President Donald J. Trump stripped the mandate from the PPACA via executive order.  Coupled with a reduction in excessive regulations and rules is when the economy exploded.

Joe Biden will soon be our next president.  There is not much point bemoaning what seems to have occurred in the hours, days, and weeks following the Election, we’ll leave that for other writers and for other times.  No, we must look at what’s going to occur because Joe will soon be our president and one of the negative things we expect to happen is a return of the Obamacare mandate.

Combine that with the economic and societal damage caused by COVID-19 and we have the prospect of economic destruction on a scale heretofore unimagined in the history of this country for working-class folks like you and I, even worse than the Great Depression was for our country.

We will discuss what most likely is going to happen when ‘President-elect Joe Biden’ becomes ‘President Joe Biden’ on January 20.

This is a cartoon caricature of me when I was working at a restaurant in Wasco, CA, my hometown.  The up-and-coming Bakersfield, California, street artist Simone did portraits of each of us here at the blog so I hope you like them as much as I, ahem, do.  Ah, well, I joined the Chefs de Cuisine of Greater Bakersfield, ACF, not long after it was chartered and am still a member even though the chapter is no longer in operation.  I began working in foodservice in the late 1960’s, moved from Wasco, CA, to Monterey, CA, and then returned to my hometown in 2004.  I have been a food server, a Mixologist, and am a Certified Cook.  I am equally at home in both the kitchen and behind the bar (and on the floor, too).  My passions are numerous, and my favorite is working in the bakery whenever I have had a chance.

We continue offering CDs today by one of the greatest San Francisco bands of all time, the Quicksilver Messenger Service. The band’s sixth album, “Quicksilver,” hit record store shelves in 1971 and found the band back in Frisco and with only Dino Valenti, Gary Duncan, Greg Elmore, and David Freiberg still aboard and with Mark Naftalin on keyboards.  This is an overlooked album, but it is one that every serious collector of the times needs to own so please seek it out wherever you shop for the best in rock music.  You will be glad you did.  In five days, we begin promoting the Jefferson Airplane’s discography; you do NOT want to miss that.

ENDNOTES:

[i] One of my other post published last July was one in which, I laid out further reasons as WHY ET and I were going to vote for Trump: the out-of-control violence that was trashing our country.  I am sorry, we didn’t see the Democratic Party out there trying to do anything to stop it but were in fact spurring it on to the point that the American people could not take it any longer.  Trump promised law and order and we voted for law and order.

[ii] The employer requirement says that businesses with 50 or more full-time workers must provide health care coverage up to 95% of their employees and their families up to age 26.  Otherwise, if we fail to provide healthcare coverage, we must pay a fee of $2,000 per employee (excluding the first 30 full-time employees) which as you can see for a restaurant would be devastating.   The mandate, however, does not apply to employers with 49 or fewer full-time employees although most restaurants have between 50 and 75 employees so we find ourselves on the firing line. Employers with less than 25 FTE (full-time employees) can qualify for ‘help’ from the federal government but note- nothing is ever ‘free’ or helpful from government.  There is always a catch.

The important thing for us as foodservice business owners is that we protect our identities because in the age of the Cancel Culture, IF Marxist punks leads boycotts against us, it can destroy businesses that have been around for years, if not decades.
