Open Letter to Gavin Newsom from a lifelong Democrat voter: Trump’s out so take the COVID-19 boot off our necks and allow us to reopen our businesses before it’s impossible to recover

I do not think it’s that much to ask, Mr. Governor. I mean, we thought Speaker Pelosi was going to shove through a COVID-19 relief bill that was going to help us but it now appears that politics got in the way. Trump is out, Trump is gone, so can we please return to a normal life?

FALL SESSION 2020

BLOG POST #3,683 AT THE AICP-END

ELECTION DAY 2020 PLUS TWENTY-SEVEN

In California, we are at the point of NO return- what comes NEXT is up to YOU, Governor Newsom; what are you going to do for us, your voter base?

Arvin, CA 93203, 11-30-2020 Monday: Well, here we are again, my friends.  Six months ago, I was writing about the skepticism I had towards using the Beijing Bat Virus as a means of crashing the economy in the hope it would defeat Donald Trump in November was not the path I would have chosen to follow if I were in the Democratic Party’s upper echelons.  I was proven right.  Yes, we may have pushed one of the all-time worst candidates across the finish line but at what expense?  At what price?  Our restaurant is suffering as are tens of thousands of others and we most likely will have to put it up for sale because there seems to be no end to the lockdowns and restrictions here in California.  Governor Gavin Newsom, I am a frigging Democrat, have always voted Democrat, and you, sir, are killing my family’s business.  What the f**k?  What the hell is wrong with you?

Granted, Kern County is not quite as insane as that dumb ass running Los Angeles but even so, we’re in the purple, we can only do takeout even though everywhere else, people can flock to BIG BOX stores, grocery stores, pot shops, and liquor stores so why is sitting down and enjoying a meal with friends, family, co-workers, and even strangers sitting alongside one another at the lunch counter a problem with a space in between one another?  You don’t seem to have a problem going out and dining yourself, there, Mr. Governor.

I get it, my family business is nowhere near the status of the French Laundry[i] in Yountville, California, or any other place in the Napa Valley for that matter, but why is it okay for you, your family, and your friends to go out, sit indoors, and talk for hours, your big mouths flapping to the point that other fortunate diners became irritated with you, called the press, and turned you in, you’re a hypocrite.  Why are we unable to open the doors and fill our restaurant, especially in the holiday season which runs from mid-November until New Year’s Day.  WHY?

Dear Governor Gavin Newsom: we know that when the Bat Flu first arrived here in the United States, it was bad, it infected people with vulnerabilities as well as medical professionals treating them.  This always seems to be the case when a new disease presents itself which everyone in a position of power told us ‘two weeks to slow it down would be like kryptonite for the spread of this novel disease.’

Somehow the two weeks became a month and then became months of lockdowns and restrictions and restaurants like ours could soon be on the auction block because we cannot keep our staff employed, we cannot pay for our supplies only to have them go to waste, not to mention taxes that Sacramento never seems to consider setting aside.  Perhaps if Sacramento gave us six months of no taxes and no subsequent demand that we pay them at some future date, perhaps we could keep the doors open on one-quarter occupancy but until then, nope, we are going to go bankrupt.

Therefore, Mr. Governor, we got the chosen candidate into the White House so can you please remove the boot atop our necks?  People have changed their lives in ways that at one time would have been unheard of, undreamed of, so if we are going through these changes, if we are toeing the line, if we are doing everything you demand of us, can you relieve the pressure upon us?  It’s not that much to ask of a Democratic  governor in a Democratic state with a Democratic legislature, can you relieve the flipping pressure from us?

I do not think it’s that much to ask, Mr. Governor.  I mean, we thought Speaker Pelosi was going to shove through a COVID-19 relief bill that was going to help us but it now appears that politics got in the way.  Trump is out, Trump is gone, so can we please return to a normal life?

If you don’t allow us to proceed with our lives, then you are going to bear full responsibility for what comes next and 2022 is not that far away.  It’s not that far away.  Don’t make my family and me have no choice left to us other than to sign the recall petition that has your name on it, Governor Newsom, because we are getting close to scrawling our signatures, along with those of our employees, on them.  Everyone is willing and ready to go.  What say you?

Going to be a fascinating week, folks, I have more time on my hands than I have ever had thanks to Governor Newsom and I look forward to putting it to productive use.

See you tomorrow.

This is a facsimile of me as a young chef back in the 1960’s when I was working as a sous chef at a fine dining restaurant, the Victor Hugo, over on the coast around Newport, California.  I began my career working as a pot washer at the age of 10, move to washing dishes in 1958, became a chef’s apprentice in 1961 and have been a career professional ever since.  I am still involved in professional foodservice as a consultant for food and beverage professionals.  Famed Bakersfield street artist Simone created the cartoonish figure of me, which appears to be ‘me’ but I hope I look better than how he portrayed me.  You are the judge.

Savoy Brown continues rolling along and on March 06, 2007, the band released another studio effort, “Steel.” The lineup for this superlative studio effort consists of Kim Simmonds (guitars/vocals/harmonica/keyboards), Gary Sorrentino (bass), and Dennis Cotton and Mario Staiano (drums).  This album is a fine addition to the growing discography of the British blues band, which is why we urge everyone to embark on a digital journey to the world’s greatest online marketplace, Amazon.com.  When you arrive there, pick out the format, the condition, and the price that works best for you—you will be glad you did.

[i] My family and I have eaten at the French Laundry as we have at other famed restaurants up and down the Napa Highway, and especially in Calistoga.  Calistoga is one of those glorious places where restaurants lie side by side, menus change every day and the food amazing.  As a member of the Chefs De Cuisine, you know, the American Culinary Federation, we revere foodservice but it should be fair for everyone, from the local Der Weiner schnitzel to Alioto’s on Fishermen’s Wharf to Arvin and Grapevine, California.  No, people of every political party in California HATE Gavin Newsom and we are going to get him out of office unless he comes around and quick- especially now that a vaccine is on its way.
