329. TODAY IN HISTORY—TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2020

T. 1942 Tuesday: Hitler’s so-called ‘fireman,’ German Field Marshal Eric von Manstein, arrives at Starobelsk to seek a way to relieve the trapped Germans at Stalingrad. The day before Lt. General Friedrich Paulus had requested ‘freedom of movement,’ meaning if the hedgehog defense failed to contain the Soviets, he wanted to break out with the army to the southwest. Hitler had told him to hold on and today, Paulus issues the same request to which, the Fuhrer issued a Fuhrer Decree- the highest decree in the Third Reich- ordering Paulus to stay put, that the Sixth Army would be supplied by the Luftwaffe.
