Q. 1942 Friday: The Soviet Winter Offensive continues as 1 million Russians breach Axis lines on the Eastern Front. The Rumanians were already crumbling north of Stalingrad while the second phase of Operation Uranus saw two fresh armies under the command of General Yeremenko launched attacks against the Rumanians south of the city. By nightfall, his armies had torn a 30-mile gap in the Axis lines while the northern sector saw a hole 50 miles wide. The Russians had bagged 10,000 Rumanian prisoners already. Meanwhile, the British 8th Army recaptures Benghazi, Libya, from the combined Afrika Korps-Italian army forces fighting there.
