Democrat voters no more want mob violence than any other voters yet it seems to be an inescapable fact of life depending upon where one lives

The sad fact of the matter is they no longer feel safe living in the places they do. Elly and her husband have lived in Oregon for about 13 years while Liko and his family have been in Rockford for about 11 years. Both families say they love the areas in which, they live but that none of them feels the security they once enjoyed and both believe it is because elected Democrats are allowing everything to spiral out of control, in some misguided attempt at removing Donald Trump.

BLOG POST #3,572 AT THE AICP-END

84 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2020

Restoring law and order should not be ‘political’

Honolulu, HI 96782, 08-11-2020 Tuesday:   Hawaii is slowly dying due to the COVID-19 pandemic and last Saturday, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell extended the mandatory stay-at-home order into next month with fines in excess of $1,000 and threats of up to one year in jail for anyone who violates them.  Who would ever have thought something such as this would befall our beautiful state, if this keeps up, there is going to be nothing left for anyone to do unless, of course, they work for government in one form or another.

Granted, things are not as bad as they could be what with many essential businesses- including religious services being somewhat permitted, provided everyone observes the social distancing rules and wears masks.  Those who are ill must remain at home but schools can reopen provided everyone observes the same rules regarding hygiene, sanitation, and social distancing.

Like everywhere else, however, it seems to be that protesting the murder of George Floyd[i] in Minneapolis a few months back is ono, it’s A-Okay, you can march, shout, wave signs, protest but trying to pack a church to hear the Word of God not so much.

We have had our own protest marches such as ones that go from Waikiki to Ala Moana Beach Park.  Our protesters typically do  not run amok in the streets torching buildings and attacking people as seems to be the norm in other parts of the country.[ii]

Believe it or not, I have relatives living on the mainland.  My older sister Elikapeka (we call her ‘Elly’) lives in Beaverton, Oregon, just to the south and west of Portland.  I typically talk to her and my brother-in-law Ernie every other week and they tell me things have gotten so crazy there that they are thinking about selling their house and either moving back home to the Islands or to Texas where he can maximize his digital security skills, maybe even relocating his business.

Elly has told me NO one wants to drive into Portland because one can easily wind up in an area where a flash mob can suddenly materialize and all hell can break loose.  Every time a mob shows up like a poof of smoke out of a genie’s lamp, all sorts of insanity breaks out, no one is observing any social distancing requirements, and the rule of law seems to have broken down.  One would think the mob attacking civilians would be ‘kapu’ but nope, they will attack anyone they can who fails to avoid the riot zone.[iii]

My younger brother Liko and his wife, Noelani live in Rockford, Illinois[iv], where he works in one of the local hospitals (I will say no more) and she as a teacher in a local college.  Likewise, the two of them have begun making noises about cashing it all in and either moving out to the countryside and to a smaller town or returning home to a piece of land they own on the Big Island.

Look, say what you will about Donald Trump, the nation was going in the right direction prior to the arrival of COVID-19.  No one expected a pandemic to arrive, nipping at our heels but it did, has become problematic, and what disturbs Lalo and I is the level of hypocrisy surrounding this disease[v].

Some people suffer, some people don’t, and yet, wherever there is a breakdown of law and order, it seems as though mobs can take to the streets while the rest of us have to cower inside our homes or- if we’re lucky enough- to be able to run our businesses as long as all we do is provide takeout and outdoor orders but be careful if all you offer is booze.

Until everyone suffers the same restrictions, there should be NO restrictions imposed on anyone just like teachers who aren’t working should lose their salaries after the first month of inactivity and go on unemployment like everyone else.  Unemployment in the Aloha State is not enough for any worker to survive.[vi]

Let’s see how everyone thinks about the shutdowns then.

Up-and-coming Bakersfield, California, street artist, Simone, created this cartoonish caricature of me so we can keep our identities on the down low due to increasing threats, Web intrusions and threats, and so we do not lose our professional businesses because of our politics here at the AICP-END Blogs.

That said, I began my career in the early 1970’s when I apprenticed to cook under one of the masters on the Big Island where I was born.  I moved to Oahu in the early 1980’s after having worked in both Kona and Hilo, HI, and have been there for most of my professional career.

Moreover, I have also worked on Maui for a few years (1995-1998) and have been on Kauai (2001-2003) before returning to Honolulu.  My goal is to prepare the next generation of chefs for the future and to help the underprivileged in their struggle to attain careers in the foodservice industry.

FOOTNOTES:

[i] What happened to George Floyd was a horrible act.  However, I will say this and that is after seeing the FULL tape of the arrest of Mr. Floyd, Lalo and I were somewhat stunned, questioning why an arrest for criminal behavior/activity and the uncooperativeness of Mr. Floyd ignite massive protests followed by riots across the country.  Something isn’t right here.  Something must be investigated before we proceed any further.

[ii] Unlike other parts of the country, Hawaii’s people are respectful, disciplined, and correct when it comes to public protests.  It would be great if other parts of our nation would follow our example.

[iii] It is difficult for anyone to imagine people behaving- or misbehaving if you like- the way we have seen in Portland, Oregon, and in Seattle, Washington.  I have visited both places but what we have seen on the boob tube is extremely disturbing and it would be great if it would stop.

[iv] The fabled home of Cheap Trick!

[v] We cannot fault the president for doing what he did initially to stop the Chinese Virus so how can we blast him for what he’s done.  I think if he had not sealed off the country to communist China, we would be approaching at least half-a-million dead and far more devastation across the country.  Let’s give credit where credit is due.

[vi] I am sorry, I believe after one month of being paid, public sector employees who are unessential should be forced to go on unemployment like every other American worker.  Then, let’s see how quickly they will want to go back to work rather than remaining home demanding all manner of crazy ideas such as defunding the police or implementing cruel environmental restrictions that will set our nation back by 50 years.
