Question: IF COVID-19 is running amok south of the Equator, why is everyone hopeful that by the time the weather warms north of it, that this insidious contagion will go dormant?

Now, I am not saying I will vote for President Trump (as that is not something I would ever admit, even to my husband), because the family might be wanting to send me to the lolo bin for observation. However, if the economy recovers and our portfolios return to their previous highs if not higher, it’s going to be extremely difficult NOT to cast a vote for this guy.

SPRING SESSION 2020

BLOG POST #3,446 AT THE AICP-END

213 DAYS UNTIL ELECTION DAY 2020

We hope COVID-19 disappears and soon…

Kihei, HI 96753, 04-07-2020 Tuesday:  Yesterday, I shocked members of the readership when I said that I thought President Donald J. Trump was doing a superb job with his handling of the COVID-19 crisis, the one currently sweeping the world.  This contagious disease is in, I believe, 182 countries (and most likely in most of the rest if they were honest), which means it is thriving on both sides of the Equator.  People north of that dividing line are prayerful that by the time summer comes, the coronavirus will go dormant.

However, if it is spreading through the Southern Hemisphere, that means it’s the end of summertime down there so if COVID-19 is infecting people to the south of us, in their fall season, how is the virus going to slow down come summertime up here?  It seems to be an all-weather contagion hammering almost every country and region of the world.

IF this is a year-round virus, the economic damage that is going to befall the United States and the rest of the world is going to be profound.  If it takes 12-18 months to develop a feasible vaccine with which to fight this nasty piece of work, that could ruin the nation’s economic gains that have boosted everyone’s standard of living to their highest point in I cannot remember how long.

Say what you will about Donald Trump, I cannot bash his handling of the economy.  More people in Hawaii and around the nation have been working better jobs, full-time jobs, and even able to find second jobs, you know, moonlighting, so they can make more disposable income and pay off older debt like student loans.  Money has been plentiful, housing costs have gone down (well, maybe not here), and prospects have improved for everyone.

Now, I am not saying I will vote for President Trump (as that is not something I would ever admit), even to my husband, because the family might be wanting to send me to the lolo bin for observation.  However, if the economy recovers and our portfolios return to their previous highs if not higher, it’s going to be extremely difficult NOT to cast a vote for this guy.

When it comes to China, he’s the only one who’s held their squirming feet to the blazing fire.  For far too long, we just accepted the fact that Beijing was going to eat our lunch, every single day, as though we were new seventh graders in a rough junior high school.

President Obama never did (and you all know I love the guy), but he told us this ‘was as good as it was going to get and that he would be the one to manage the nation’s decline.’  No one wanted to hear that although the economy had been in the toilet for far too long so it seemed reasonable and sensible at the time.

The economic gains we have enjoyed the past three years are not something we enjoyed since the 1980s and 1990s.  For far too long, wages and prices froze, people received less benefits, it was what it was and the evil in this is that it happens slowly, bit by bit, that everyone becomes anesthetized to it.  It’s insidious, it’s slow, and although employees want to know why their paychecks are not as good as they were the year or the decade prior, it’s dulls the senses and so people become disenchanted with their jobs.

As a long-time employer with my hubby, we were affected by the same slow down in the economy.  Although the costs of everything went up, we had difficulty in raising menu prices as if we did, our customers would go somewhere else.   We struggled along like everyone else here in Hawaii.

I hope we get a handle on COVID-19 and do it soon so we can get back to watching the economy blast off once more.  We want our stock portfolios to take off just as we want our retirement benefits package take off for our employees.  We want everyone to do well and if we have to hold our noses and make a difficult decision when it comes to whom we vote for, we must do what is good for our pocketbooks and for those of our workers and customers.

Friends, I know we were going to talk more about China but there is plenty of time for us to do it over the next five days.  Thinking about what they have done gives me chicken skin.  I like what my friend Goldie said about returning to a Two-China Policy.  We should never have thrown Taiwan under the pineapple train on behalf of communists in Beijing.

Let us embrace one another in the spirit of Aloha.  Love you all.

I must say I am amazed that the AICP-END Blog would send up-and-coming Bakersfield, California, street artist, the amazing Simone to Maui to do some photographic portraits of me.  We have moved in this direction since politics have turned millions of people against one another and it is important for us as employers and as private people with families to protect, that we begin covering our actual identities from those seeking to cause us problems.  Simone has done an outstanding job and this is a caricature of me that meets with my approval.  My husband and I live and own a restaurant in Kihei, Hawaii, and have also worked in institutional cooking at Maui’s premier hospital up in Wailuku.
